THE FIRST GLIMPSE OF FOUNDERS

You’re driving up the hill, nervous because you don’t know what to expect. But you
do, you’ve visited universities before! You’re an experienced pro, able to suss out all the
best bits, the accommodation, the department; but then you turn into the entrance, and
you see it. Founders. The towering red brick castle standing in front of you takes your
breath away. You have to park, but you can’t stop twisting and turning your head, looking
at the turrets rising into the air, and you may be sold already. You walk towards the
Windsor building, on your way to start the open day, but you have to walk past Founders.
You glimpse into the quad, and see marble statues, dewy green grass...and then it’s
gone. You’re late! Your mum is pulling you away. Throughout the day, you have talks from
your department, from the head of the university, and you find it all interesting, the uni
seems like the right fit for you.. and you can’t wait for a glimpse of that magnificent building
again. You go on a campus tour, and finally get to go inside the building. You could live
here?! This knowledge has sealed the deal. And then to top it all off, you enter the chapel.
The light is whinging through the stained glass windows, though loads of people are
milling around, it all goes quite. You crane your head to look at the paintings on the ceiling
and turn and just stop and breathe it all in. You’ve made the decision. You don’t even have
to think about it. This is your university. You drive home, all the while thinking of Founders
and Royal Holloway and you know you’ve made the right choice.
